There are no limits on hogs. For early season hog hunting (September – January), the meal schedule will be breakfast/brunch at 10:30 AM, and supper at 4pm; for hunting February – May, breakfast will be ~ 8 AM – 9 AM, supper 3 PM – 5 PM, getting to the late end of that time frame in April-May. This is because hogs get more nocturnal as the season progresses. All evening hunts February and in the spring will end no later than midnight.

In 2019, the laws were changed in Texas: it is no longer a requirement to have a Texas hunting license to hunt hogs in Texas; however, a small game license is still required if the hunter wishes to take any varmints or other non-game animals such as coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, mountain lions, etc.

Because of past season’s numerous fruitless searches for bucks hunters were certain they had hit, there will be a $250.00 fee assessed for drawing blood plus the $250.00 trophy fee, as even 1 drop of blood constitutes the harvesting of that buck, and your buck hunt is over. If no blood is found after a concentrated search, missing will result in a $250.00 fee, but hunter may continue to buck hunt; and, in the event of a miss, if a buck is taken later, the hunter will have to pay the appropriate trophy fee in addition to the miss fee already assessed. In past years far too many long shots with deer reportedly going down occurred without any blood being found. Fees for shooting underage does, button bucks, and immature bucks will also apply to all Hunt the Rut packages.(see details under our doe package section).

Background Information:
The “reverse” trophy fees detailed above were instituted because of poor hunter target selection. The number of 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old ten points harvested last year was appalling. Having achieved parity on our deer herd sex ratios, having planted and heavily fertilized a stupendous number of food plots, as managers, we have done all we can to produce a herd of trophy deer; The BigWoods will never reach the goal of producing East Texas 200 class B&C deer on a regular basis unless we get some management help from our hunters. If generations of 2 and 3 year old bucks are lost every year, deer of this size will never happen. Also, because of these considerations, The BigWoods no longer offers “ala carte” buck hunts, but rather our offering is restricted to the Hunt the Rut package. We shall keep a close eye on our hunters, anticipating a “culling” of individual hunters if their performance does not improve. We are looking to develop a long term relationship with our returning hunters so that the big young buck you let walk this year will be next year’s trophy of a lifetime.

Doe Hunts:
Parent/Child Doe Hunts:
– 2 day doe hunt during the whitetail rut (Friday – Sunday)
– $865/Parent & Child
– $375/Additional Child

Includes
– Unlimited Does

– Meals
– Transportation to and from hunt areas
– Care of game animals

At The BigWoods, for these purposes, a child is defined as 15 years old or younger. (See details concerning under aged does, button bucks, spike bucks, and multi pointed bucks below.)

Single Adult Doe Hunt:
– 2 day doe hunt during the whitetail rut (Friday – Sunday)
– $685/Person

Includes
– Unlimited Does
– Lodging
– Meals
– Transportation to and from hunt areas
– Care of game animals

(See details concerning under aged does, button, bucks, spike bucks, and multi pointed bucks below.)

The BigWoods record for a 2 day doe hunt is 23 does.

For all doe hunts, the rules and fines listed below will be strictly enforced, after all, this is supposed to be a mature doe hunt, so the following fees will be charged for specific mistakes by the hunter.
– Button Bucks $395.00/animal
– Does under 65 lbs. $135.00/animal
– Spikes with antlers 2” or more $425.00/animal
– Fork horn or larger racks $3500.00/animal

This past season we had a terrible carnage inflicted on our young bucks by our doe hunters. This simply must stop. As a result, we have increased the penalties spelled out above for such mistakes. Although these doe hunts are often an entry level hunt for young hunters, it is appropriate that they learn the rules of the game and to identify deer properly from the get go; teaching this is the responsibility of their mentor.

Licenses:
Hunters will need a valid Texas hunting license; however, they will use BigWoods managed deer permits and will not need to use their personal tags.

Also, hunters, both in and out of state, born after September 1, 1971 will need to show evidence of having completed a hunter safety course.

Lodging and Night Activities:
The accommodations at The BigWoods are first class. Because buildings may be shared with different groups of hunters, unless one group is the sole occupier of it’s place of lodging, we ask that partiers shut it down by10 PM out of courtesy to those in other groups that will be getting up early the next morning to hunt.

Non-hunters:
A non-hunter may accompany a hunter who has purchased any type of hunt @ The BigWoods for $125/night on a space-available basis; this must be booked @ the time when the hunt itself is booked.

Early Arrival:
Hunters who arrive in the area the day before their hunt may lodge at the Bigwoods for 50/night/person instead of staying at a motel. No meals are included. Early birds will have access to their lodging quarters and the rifle range, but going afield before the hunt is regularly scheduled to begin and access to the amenities of the lodge are not permitted early.

Fishing:
Hunters are always welcome to bass fish during the day @ The BigWoods and keep all bass less than 3 lbs. Fish greater than 10 lbs can be kept if they are to be mounted.

Shooting:
A covered 40 yard to 500 yard rifle range, a reloading room, as well as a bow range, is available free of charge to guests of The BigWoods. It is strongly urged that visiting shooters use this rifle range to be sure that the rifle is still on target after making the trip to The BigWoods. We strongly recommend not shooting at running animals as well.

Predators:
All predators, including mountain lions can be taken free of charge by any BigWoods hunters who has booked a buck or a boar hunt, i.e., doe hunters do not qualify for free predators.

4 wheeler policy:
The BigWoods is a paradise for ATV riders with over 100 miles of roads through some of the wildest places in Texas. We encourage hunters to bring their own ATVs as this affords them access to this amenity as well as giving them more independence as to when they come and go hunting. Please note: If your party has not bought out the exclusive use of the Bigwoods for a weekend and there are other hunting parties present at the Bigwoods, ATV use will be restricted so as not to disturb other hunters.

Travel by ATVs are inherently more dangerous than automobiles or pickups. Hence, a liability release is required before ATVs can be used on our property, and by signing this release, the hunter acknowledges the substantial risk of this activity. While we at the BigWoods make a concerted effort to maintain our roads in a safe condition, tree falls and washouts- to name just two hazards, may occur unexpectedly around any corner. Thus, it is the responsibility of the driver to maintain a low, safe speed, always remaining under control. If reckless driving is observed, the ATV will be impounded until the hunt is over. Four-wheeling is subject to the follow BigWoods rules:

1. Hunters are not allowed to drive by other hunters when the hunt is on. This is common courtesy. Our staff will always be able to tell you where all the hunters will be. If one party has exclusive reign over the BigWoods then this can be worked out amongst the hunters in your own group, otherwise check with our guides prior to setting out on your own.

2. Mud dogging is not allowed. We have made a great investment in our road system here and take great pride in the quality of it so please be warned that mud doggers shall be drawn and quartered. Nuff said?

A few reminders:
– Bring a gun and use our rifle range before you head out.
– Don’t forget warm hunting clothes, don’t forget gloves and a hat, it can get cold in Texas!
– Walk-in coolers, freezers and ice machines are on the premises.
